My Unorthodox Copyright Policy [or, Why It's Okay to Steal This Blog]
Let’s cut to the chase: The content on this blog is yours. It’s yours to use as you please.
That means don’t bother emailing me…don’t bother asking permission through the comments…
Don’t bother printing out a handful of posts and mailing them to me with a Post-It Note on top asking, “Can I share these with my community group?”
Just do it.
“It” being whatever your little heart is longing to do.
Whether it’s wholesale copy-and-pasting of a post into your blog…
Or running this content through a syndicated feed on your site…
Or flipping 100 posts into a book that you allow other people to download.
Just do it. And don’t look over your shoulder. I’m not coming.
There is a hitch, though. Whatever you do…give me credit for it. And publish a link back to my blog. And if you make any money off of my work…it’d be nice if you slid me some cash.
This is all I ask.
Why Am I Doing This?
Simple. This is going to sound absurd…but I’m doing it for selfish reasons. See, it’s not money that I lack. It’s popularity.
Science fiction writer Corey Doctrow gives away his books. For free. He argues that the biggest threat to authors is not piracy–but obscurity.
I couldn’t agree more.
And I figure the easier I can make my ideas spread…the faster these ideas can rise out of this ditch known as obscurity.
What This Means to You
You know what what this all means, right? In reality, you and I are copyright holders of this blog content.
You, me and 6.7 billion other people.
Let’s just hope that 1/10 of a percent of them has as much enthusiasm about my content as you and I do. Cause, if you’re still with me, you got to have enthusiasm…
And if you got enthusiasm, that means I can count on you to pick up a post or two every now and then and share it with your friends, families and foes.
Right?
So, go. Spread. The formula’s simple: Copy. Paste. Credit me. And if you need me. I’ll be right here. Cranking out more content.
