How I’m Recalibrating My Blog Content Schedule

Sunday, May 17th, 2009 | Blogging, Writing

You probably came here looking for the typical Sunday post on some Christian cult.

Sorry. Not today. I’ve been chewing on change…

Here’s the scoop: Posting on weekends creates tension. Tension between writing posts, checking comments and minding my wife and children.

On the one hand I consider it good manners to maintain a predictible content schedule and to respond to comments frequently.

On the other hand, I’ve got a wife and kids who don’t see me for most of the week.

Yet, I’ve made an unspoken commitment to publish 13 posts on 13 different cults each Sunday.

Once I’ve posted my 13th, I can clear my weekend schedule. That’s the deal I made with myself.

[Sometimes I'm loyal to a fault.]

However, like all ephinanies, I had a bright idea in the most unusual places that solves this issue swiftly and properly.

Near asleep on the foot of my daughter’s bed it occurred to me that there is no reason why I couldn’t clear my weekend now.

Naturally, I’d have to realign the Sunday posts to show up on the weekdays. But other than writing a post explaining what I was doing, there was no reason why I had to wait.

So that’s what I’m doing.

Here’s the Deal

One of my 2009 goals for Fallen and Flawed was to write 250 blog posts. I’m nearly half way there. And it’s the middle of May.

That means I could safely scale back to a 5-day-a-week, Monday through Friday, content schedule that looks like this:

Monday: God’s Attributes Series

Tuesday: Bible Issues

Wednesday: 10 Questions with an Atheist Series

Thursday: 13 Quick Facts about Cults or Near Cults Series

Friday: Letting My Hair Down [More personal stuff]

As each series ends, I plan on starting new ones.

For example, after the God’s attributes, I want to tackle other doctrines in a Plain English series. After the 10 Questions, launch a How to Debate series, covering similar topics like the POE dilemma post

Maybe even do a Heresies in Plain English. Heresies always seems to bump traffic.

One thing I need from you: Ideas. I’m a pretty driven guy with a strong sense of where he wants to go, but I also think it’s incredibly helpful to ask for advice.

So let me know if there’s a topic you’d like me to cover.

Another thing you could do for me is keep me in your prayers: I’m seriously thinking about taking November off so I can focus on writing a novel during the National Novel Writing Month project.

I have a novel bristling in me and NaNoWriMo is a perfect time to get it off my chest.

Listen: That you are reading this means a lot to me. This blog thrives on your contribution, prayers, comments, challenges and thoughts. I can’t thank you enough for what you bring to the table.

So, thank you for being a faithful reader. Now go and chum with family and friends. Happy Sunday.

Was that minding your children like watching or minding like, “yes, I mind your interruption?” Both? With your last post on being an introvert, and this post-sounds like a good stretch and focus to-BE WITH-the fam. Off topic, but could you write a post on how you actually find time to be a family man and do all the reading you do and writing you do? Posts like the POE post are exceeding helpful as well. Oh, and “Heresies are good for traffic” cracked me up.

Hey, Demian! I love your blog! Though being non-Christian, I’m finding it a lil difficult to follow everything you write! I’m learning though. I’m also reading a book on the life of Christ, but the language used there is much too complex. Could you please recommend a book with easy language? So that I can understand all of your blog posts completely. Really wanna do so!

Keep up the awesome work!

And yes, I am trying my best to publicise your blog as much as I can, recommending it to friends.

Regards,
Manali

And oh, good luck for your book! I’m sure you’ll do well!

Martin: I meant “watching.” “Minding” is a bit ambiguous. Sorry about that. ;-) And I look forward to writing a post on balance. That’s a great idea!

Manali: Thank you for your kind words. Two books I’d highly recommend are A. W. Tozer’s Knowledge of the Holy and J. I. Packer’s Knowing God. The first one is super easy to read. Let me know what you think.

Demian, take the day off! (although today is Monday and you’re back on.) I fully support your new schedule, and I’m excited to see what you have to say in Plain English!

D,
The new schedule sounds great. Due to the fact that you’re so prolific, I personally have a hard time keeping up with your posts. If I get tied up for two or three days and am not able to visit your blog, it can take me 5 days to catch up! Not only that, I wholeheartedly condone your desire to make your family a priority. I’m telling you, one day you’re going to turn around and wonder how they grew up so fast.
~
As far as topic suggestions, how about spiritual gifts, ongoing studies of various books of the Bible, past and present pillars of the faith, a look at famous sermons–past and present, faith and the workplace, to name just a few off the top of my head?
~
Now, are you going to start your new novel in November, or are you expecting to finish it then, too? I’d love to know your premise, unless you don’t want to spill the beans just yet.

Richard: Great topic ideas, particularly studies of various Bible books and pillars of faith, both ideas I had on my radar. Famous sermons is one I never thought about either that sounds intriguing.

From Nov 1 to Nov 30 I write 50,000 words. It’s basically writing a rough draft from start to finish in a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants style. I’ve got two competing ideas, and when the time grows closer, I’ll decide and consider sharing. ;-)

Glad you like the new schedule.

Thanks for the clarification:

I meant “watching.” “Minding” is a bit ambiguous. Sorry about that.

I had thought that by “minding my wife and children,” you meant you were doing whatever they told you to do! :)
]
Gotta go with the majority in approving your new schedule. I’ve always hated the idea of your kids having to ask your wife to “Tell us about Daddy!” ;)
]
Kind of along the lines of Richard’s suggestion, consider mini-bios on some of the Reformers and the Puritans, perhaps the less well known ones. Also essential doctrines of the Faith (perhaps paralleling heresies). How about interviewing Christians as you have nonbelievers? And possibly an occasional (or regular) guest column.
]
Manali, I’m interested in what piqued your attraction to this blog and to the life of Christ? I agree with Demian’s choice of books and recommend that to get the most from them you ask God to help you understand as you read.

Hey Demian!
-
Thanks for the recommendations. But Tozer’s Knowledge of the Holy is more about understanding of God’s nature – and for that, I already have your blog!! Besides, both the books aren’t accessible in India.. The book I am reading follows the life of Christ -his childhood, etc and his teachings. And actually that is what I wanted to read more on…

Al,

I surf a lot – I accidently came across Demian’s blog! About my interest..well, you come across stuff regarding Christianity at so many websites..I liked what I read and decided to find out more! Different religions intrigue me.. so just read up a few things :) Plus I’m a firm believer in God, so this blog really works for me!

Hey Demian,
*
Full approval here for taking a day off for the fam. As one whose husband works a lot, I know how much it means to me (and the kids!!!!) when he carves out regular time to be with us.
*
I’m certain your readers are loyal and taking a day off will mean nothing for readership.
*
Who reads blogs on the weekend anyway? :)

Thank you Abigail!

Manali: Oh, okay…got it. Pick any John Piper book on Christ for an easy read…nice thing is they are free [you can download them]. Start here and you can work your way through a series of books on Christ: http://urlkiss.com/0yk
Let me know if that helps!
