13 Quick Facts on Spiritism
This one nearly creeped me out. I mean, if Tom Cruise going postal over Scientology was an 8 on the creepy scale…this was a 10.
You’ll see why in a minute.
What is spiritism? Spiritism is nothing more than the science, philosophy and religion of continuous life…based upon communication with those in the spirit world.
In other words, communication with the dead. Think seance. Table turning. Even levitation.
And one of the reasons why nobody can effectively take credit as founder of Spiritism is because it’s a cult of antiquity [read: older than dirt]. However…
1. In the late to mid 18th Century, Kate Fox challenged an invisible noise-maker, presumed to be a spirit, to repeat the snaps of her fingers. “It” did. Mediums are born.
2. Other peculiar noises in the upstairs and cellars of the Fox home of Hydesville, New York, became known as “The Rochester Rappings.”
3. James Fenimore Cooper, William Cullen Bryant, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Arthur Conan Doyle were among those interested in spiritism. [By the way, 600 million dollars to anyone who can tell me what these five people all have in common.]
4. Spiritism seemed to be on the uptick after each great war. It also has a strong appeal to those who’ve lost loved ones.
5. In 1885, Boston resident Leonora Piper astounded people with her ability to lapse into trances during which she could answer with amazing accuracy questions concerning people who were dead.
6.Medium extraordinaire, Daniel Douglas Home, owned an accordion that played tunes all by itself.
7. Home could also levitate. The most famous case of levitation occurred in 1868 when Home floated out one window and into another. The windows were 76 inches apart, 85 feet above the ground.
8. Most Spiritists hold to seven principles: The fatherhood of God, brotherhood of man, continuous existence, communion of spirits, personal responsibility, compensation and retribution in the afterlife and in a path of endless progression.
9. Harry Houdini was known as the Medium Buster.
10. Magician and illusionist Criss Angel floating in the sky. Circa 2006.
11. What 1999 movie is about a troubled, isolated boy who can see and talk to ghosts?
12. While the majority of spiritistic phenomena are fraudulent, supernatural manifestations do occur. The Bible describes these as demonic events under God’s judgment.
13. In addition, God repeatedly warned in the strongest terms possible not to seek after mediums and not to dabble in this spirit realm.
Well…heck of a way to kick off a Sunday, don’t you think? I’m going to shower and get cleaned off. Maybe even use a scrub brush. Happy church chumming.

D,
This reminds me of the verses in 1 Samuel 28, when Saul, after God would not answer him, went to a medium so that he could talk to the dead prophet, Samuel. It didn’t turn out so well for Saul. It never does.

For the $600 million, they were all writers!
.
The most interesting part for me was
during which she could answer with amazing accuracy questions concerning people who were dead
.
Claims like that are always exciting to a skeptic like me, because it hints at evidence of a spiritual realm which is otherwise lacking. I don’t get my hopes up anymore as they always seem to end in disappointment. There are many people who will testify to the amazing accuracy with which John Edward could tell them things about dead loved ones, when it was pretty obvious to the casual observer that he needed no help from the spritual realm.
They all have three names, and none of them do their own blog. I’ll take the money in quarters, ’cause we have a lot of tolls around here.
I’ve always wondered, even in Bible times, if the spiritism was fraudulent or real. I realize #12 may be brought up, but I think the power behind open warfare and guerrilla warfare can be the same.
I think the accordian is the most interesting one.

I’ll take “What do they have in common” for $600M
They are all dead.
Paypal works for me.

Jimmineez…I’m going to need a bailout for all the right answers here…although James got what I intended when he said, “They’re all writers.”
–
James: Who’s John Edwards? You’re not talking about our most recent presidential hopeful, are you?
Demian,
It seems the LORD has placed the occult on several people’s hearts this week. I was watching a program with my 2 children called Back at the Barnyard on Nickelodeon and it was scary how much of it was aimed directly at indoctrinating our children into seances, speaking with the dead, spiritual possession and exorcism. I wrote a blog about it, and sent an e-mail to everyone in my address book to warn them about this program, but this is just the one I know about. How many others are out there that we don’t know about?
Parents – be your child’s protector! We wouldn’t leave them with strangers at the mall, why would we leave them unattended with the strangers who come into our homes through the medium (no pun intended!) of television, radio or internet?

Great post, Robert. And you’re point is spot on. I know it’s so easy with my children to let the boobtube babysit…

Where ARE you people’s priorities?!!
.
11. What 1999 movie is about a troubled, isolated boy who can see and talk to ghosts?
.
“The Sixth Sense,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, whose character uttered the phrase, “I see dead people,” which quickly became a comedic and oft-parodied catchphrase all across America.
.
Now, while Chris beat me to my first choice of an answer to:
.
3. …who can tell me what these five people all have in common.
.
…I submit that none of the five contributed in any way to the production of said 1999 movie. Split the prize money among the many who gave correct answers (I’ll take my cut in a lump sum after taxes) and, please, make the questions harder in the future.
.
OK, seriously Demian, there’s no deadline for entries so the contest never officially ends– your $600M is safe; use it wisely!

[Shew! Thanks for coming to my rescue, Al.] That’s right, folks…keep your entries coming because the contest…all contests…don’t officially end until December 31, 2099. [I can't imagine I'll live to be 127.]
Just to be clear: There’s no such thing as a ghost from a dead person, right?
June 1, 2009
Why? Got one following you?
The answer would be “no.”
I have some Catholic (and some Christian) friends and family that still believe there’s such thing as a ghost from the dead. They would be citing stories after stories. This is partially from their upbringing and culture, as most of them are Asian.
Of course, I would tell them the Bible said there’s only heaven or hell after we die.
